ANNOUNCEMENTS
“Retirement is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of the open highway.” – Author Unknown
Today, I announce my retirement in education effective February 1, 2020. I began my career in the Wake County Public School System as a 4th grade teacher, then served as a school counselor in elementary, middle, and high school.
I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing young people during my 29 years and share in so many of their life changes, events, and successes. Thank you for sharing YOUR middle schooler with me. For many of you this is your 2nd or third child. I am honored to have had the pleasure to watch them grow, mature, and blossom into young people with purpose. As adults we sometimes wonder if they really hear all the wisdom and guidance we provide, but I know through years of heart to hearts and running into them in later life, that they do!
With bittersweet joy and sadness I close this chapter in my career… All the best to the parents, guardians, family, friends, and especially the students in the Class of 2025.

REMINDER: Students may submit an elective request change form by the deadline on Thursday, January 16th. No forms will be accepted after 2:30pm. Forms are available in Student Services and during lunch block. Students may turn in forms between classes by putting them in the folder labeled with their grade. Forms are collected during lunch and in Student Services.
Due to the large number of requests, a form must be completed and is reviewed by the grade level counselor as received. Choices change as counselors update schedules, so only request from your primary/alternate list. If you are not sure of your choices, you may list a subject of interest. For example: I prefer a Social Studies elective or a PE elective as a change.
Keep in mind that 378 Seventh graders/1050 Martin students are scheduled throughout the 8 period day and all electives are not offered or available every period. Many factors go into scheduling, so understand a change is not always possible.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM REMIND
I recently learned that Verizon will be charging Remind a new fee that makes it impossible for them to continue supporting free text messaging for anyone who has Verizon Wireless as their phone carrier.
What’s happening?
To offer their text messaging service free of charge, Remind has always paid for each text that their users receive or send. Now, Verizon is charging Remind an additional fee intended for companies that send spam over its network. Your Remind messages aren’t spam, but their efforts to resolve the issue with Verizon haven’t been successful.
As a result, the Verizon fee will increase their costs of providing text messaging by 11X—pushing their annual costs into the millions of dollars. This isn’t financially feasible for them to support, and it’s forcing them to end Remind text messaging for everyone who has a wireless plan with Verizon.
How will this affect you?
Beginning January 28, 2019, you will no longer receive Remind messages as texts if you have Verizon Wireless as your phone carrier.
What can you do?
To make sure you continue receiving your messages from the CLASS of 2025, please download the mobile app or enable email notifications—both of which are free of charge. The REMIND team is also working hard on a solution that allows classes to continue to use Remind by text, and they will share more details before January 28.
In the meantime, REMIND will keep fighting to make sure educators, students, and parents have access to effective communication. To do this, they need your help: If using Remind has made a positive impact in your classroom, at your school, or anywhere in between, please ask Verizon to reverse the fee here:www.remind.com/verizon-fee
REMIND is very grateful for your support, and will be in touch soon with an update.

A message from Ms. Baxley:
Parents--one of the best ways for students to learn about careers is to learn what others do daily in their chosen career. All 6th graders will be bringing home a career family tree that they can use as a conversation starter over the holidays. The hope is that they will and start having discussions with their family members about their jobs/careers—whether it be a current or past job/career.

ELECTIVES
Students typically have three class periods available for their electives. Students can choose from yearlong, semester long, or quarter long electives.
Request to change a schedule
We do our best to accommodate elective choices. However, conflicts with core classes, yearlong electives, and/or class size sometimes prevents us from placing students in their primary choice elective class. In those cases, we look at their alternate choice or a class of similar interest or based on what is available.
Students may request to change an elective the first few days of the semester only. Forms are available in Student Services. Changes will not be considered if the student selected the elective as a primary or alternate choice. 8th graders are scheduled first, followed by 7th graders, and then 6th graders.
