November is recognized nationally as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month to educate the public about children and youth experiencing homelessness. Each year more than 1.6 million children are homeless at some point in their lives and the number is increasing (The National Center on Family Homelessness).
Last year, Wake County Public Schools identified 4,365 children and youth in transition (ie, homeless). The McKinney-Vento Program is a federal program in our district providing services that include school stability and immediate enrollment to improve academic success among students experiencing homelessness.
School and district staff are key to identifying students experiencing homelessness as defined by the federal law. The federal definition of homeless is any student in a temporary living situation due to hardship and includes families that live with others (ie., doubled up) or in hotels.
School Social Workers and SAP Counselors are the school contacts for identifying, initiating services and supporting these students. For more information, visit the McKinney-Vento site. Mrs. Tasha Smith is the School Social Worker for Martin GT Magnet Middle.

Career Interest Inventory
This week every student has the opportunity to take a career interest inventory. It will be done on paper so parents can see it as well. This is a great opener to dialogue with your child about planning for one or more of the following things:
~Electives that match their career interests
~Early colleges in Wake County that offer something associated with one of their career interests-- https://www.wcpss.net/Page/27372
This is an EXCELLENT way to start workings towards a college degree while in high school!
~How to plan for a future career
Interest inventories are a great resource because they help a student understand how their interests relate to a possible future career. Parents can also contact the Career Development Coordinator, Stacy Baxley ,directly ([email protected]) if their student has an interest in a particular early college. Follow Stacy on Twitter—MartinMSCDC to get updates on what is happening in Career & Tech Ed at Martin!

Natural Disasters: Helping Kids During Crisis • Try and keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.
• Limit exposure to television and the news.
• Be honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.
• Listen to kids’ fears and concerns.
• Reassure kids that the world is a good place to be, but that there are people who do bad things.
• Parents and adults need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress.
• Rebuild and reaffirm attachments and relationships.

2018-19 Elective Change Request Forms will be available in Student Services and located on a back table in the cafeteria. Students must drop off signed and completed form to Student Services by Thursday, August 30th no later than 2:30 p.m. No requests will be accepted after the deadline.
ELECTIVES
Students typically have three class periods available for their electives. Students can choose from yearlong, semester long, or quarter long electives.
Request to change a schedule
We do our best to accommodate elective choices. However, conflicts with core classes, yearlong electives, and/or class size sometimes prevents us from placing students in their chosen elective class. In those cases, we select a class of similar interest or based on what is available.

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is May 1st – May 7th, and May 4th is
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.
Our school nurse Linda Rogers and her nursing student from East Carolina University's College of Nursing collaborated to create an educational display for dental health month. In addition to explaining tooth decay and sugars effects on the body, it included a Coca-Cola, Gatorade, Mountain Dew, Fanta and water, with the quantity of sugar each contained in respective containers. Students were intrigued and surprised by the visual and were given the opportunity to ask questions during their lunch period on February 22nd.

Your School Counselors want you to always remember:
YOU are BRAVER than you believe
YOU are STRONGER than you seem
and
YOU are SMARTER than you think
* Know that we believe in YOU!

Today’s message is about realizing your potential to make a difference. Anne Frank once said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Anne Frank did not know that her words, written while her family hid from the Nazis during World War II, would reach and touch millions of children and adults. Unfortunately, she did not get to see that happen. Did you know you can make a difference, through realizing your potential? Look at yourself and your life. What do you like? What skills do you need to improve? How can you help others to be successful? The teachers, administrators and staff here at Martin are here to help you during this journey. And if you ever want to chat about how you can make a difference, stop by and talk to your School Counselor. Make today great!
Wednesday 2/8/17
Good morning. Today is part of “National School Counseling Week.” Our focus today is “Liberty and Learning for All.” You might wonder what that means. Liberty is defined as “the power of choosing, thinking, and acting for oneself.” And learning means to gain knowledge through systematic study. So today we will talk about how you can be responsible for your own learning and behavior here at school and at home with friends, parents and teachers. It’s not always easy to be responsible. Every day there are distractions and roadblocks — tough classes, peer pressure, friendship problems, social media, family concerns and more. The job of your School Counselor is to help each of you overcome those obstacles to reach your full potential and learn how to be responsible for your learning and your life. That’s what school counselors do: We help. Come by Student Services to talk with your School Counselor.
Thursday 2/9/17

Friday 2/10/17
Good morning. Today is the last day of “National School Counseling Week.” The message today is about exploring your potential. Many times our individual qualities and talents are what fuel our potential. Sometimes they are so innate that we tend to overlook them as possible contributors to helping us live our best lives and make dynamic contributions to our school, family and the world. Today your School Counselors encourage each of you to write down at least one quality or talent you have that makes you unique. It could be singing, writing, math, creative arts and more. Martin GT Magnet Middle offers so many opportunities for you to discover your GIFTS and TALENTS. Take a moment to think about how qualities/talents can make a difference in your life and the world around you. If you ever want to chat about discovering your talents, feel free to stop by and talk to me soon. Enjoy your day!
